Wall-plug vs. desktop power supplies: an engineering comparison

Black desktop power adapter brick with C14 inlet and DC cable

A short comparison for buyers choosing between adapter formats. If you are unsure which suits your device, contact us.

Wall (plug-in) adapters

The supply and the plug are one piece. They suit smaller loads, tight retail packs and products that sit near a wall outlet. Interchangeable plugs help if you sell in more than one region, but the housing still has to take the plug system you choose.

Desktop adapters

The brick sits on a desk or behind equipment, with a separate mains cord (often IEC) and a DC lead to the device. They suit higher power, heat that should stay off the wall plate, and installations where the cord can be swapped by market.

How to choose

Ask where the product will live, how much heat it makes, and whether the user will travel with it. Then look at power adapters and, if the housing or cord must change, customization.

Form factor selection is driven by thermal limits and global logistics: integrated wall-plugs optimize retail kit volume, while desktop bricks isolate heat and simplify regional AC cord compliance.
